Dehydration

What is dehydrated skin?

At some time during your life, you are likely to find that your skin is feeling dry, rough and maybe flaky. Before you reach for a moisturiser especially for “dry skin” take a moment to understand your skin, so you can give it the right treatment. Dehydrated skin is not the same as dry skin. Dry skin is a lack of oil in the skin; whereas dehydrated skin is a lack of water. Dry skin is a skin ‘type’ but any skin type can suffer from dehydration – and at any time.

What causes /triggers dehydrated skin?

There are many factors that may contribute to skin dehydration, such as:

  • Not drinking enough water
  • Environmental factors such as wind, cold air, heating/air conditioning, excessive sun-exposure
  • Harsh cleansers and skin care products (that disrupt the skin’s natural acid mantle)
  • Alcohol & smoking
  • Dehydrating caffeinated beverages (tea, coffee, cola)
  • Stress/emotional disharmony
  • Dietary imbalances & medications

Tips to help combat dehydrated skin naturally:

  • Switch to well formulated natural skincare free from harsh alcohols and drying chemicals
  • Keep up your water intake regularly throughout the day and avoid caffeinated drinks
  • Do something for yourself each week to keep your mind and spirit happy – lessen the stress load!
  • Consider some Omega supplements to provide hydration from within

Recommended 3 step skincare routine for dehydrated skin:

You can continue to use products designed for your specific skin type, but consider adding one or all of these products to your routine to curb the dehydration:

  1. Cleanse with Purify Facial Cleanser if you have oily skin, and for all other skin types that are dehydrated – use the Olive Soothing Cream Cleanser.
  2. Treat with Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub and Mask – this will slough away excess dead skin cells so your products better absorb. You can also pop on Radiant Rose Mask a few times a week for an immediate hydration boost.
  3. Hydrate with Olive Skin Serum. This can be applied directly to a damp face or add a few drops added to your moisturiser before applying.

During winter you may be trying to avoid dehydration. As we enter the colder winter months, you may be lulled into a false sense of security, thinking your skin doesn’t require the same level of protection and care as it does for the summer months. But in reality, our skin has just as many, if not more issues to contend with during winter.

Before you put your skin care routine into hibernation for the winter, let me share with you some contributing factors that will be affecting your skin at this time of year and some tips to help your skin glow with good health.

Dehydration

At this time of year, dehydration is the most significant skin concern affecting all skin types from oily to sensitive skin. Constant exposure to heaters during the winter months and cold winds are extremely drying to the skin. When the skin is dehydrated, this affects the skin at a cellular level, as the cell structure becomes compromised. This can lead to premature aging with the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dull looking skin.

Also, when the skin barrier is damaged from dehydration or other oxidative stressors, it can leave your skin susceptible to additional infections such as breakouts and congestion and atopic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Boost Your Hydration

Be sure to give your skin extra nourishment during the winter months. Consider using a richer nourishing moisturiser such as our Olive Repair Cream during the colder months or adding a hydration boost to your moisturiser with a few drops of our Olive Skin Serum.

And if you suffer from skin sensitivities, try to avoid having super-hot showers as this may increase skin irritations and be a trigger for atopic skin conditions. Use a protective body oil or body cream to keep your skin hydrated from top to toe.

Enjoy A Mask

With the combination of the cold, windy weather alternating with the dry, low humidity of indoor heating, the skin easily becomes dry and dehydrated as we make an effort to stay warm. Take the extra time to treat your skin by using hydration boosting and repairing face mask like our new Radiant Rose Mask to nourish your skin during the winter months.  Use it several times a week, or for extra hydration apply like a night cream and let it work its magic overnight and rinse off in the morning.
