Maskne: What You Need To Know To Treat And Prevent It

As the world grapples with the ‘new normal’ which includes social distancing and wearing a mask, a new skin problem has arrived: maskne. The internets term for mask acne. Which is a fancy way of referring to acne on the bottom half of your face only. The technical term is acne mechanica.

What causes maskne?

The combination of friction, humidity, moisture and clogged pores is the perfect breeding ground for maskne. This new skin concern is so wide-spread that 83% of healthcare workers in Hubei, China reported skin problems* as a result of wearing a mask for long periods of time.

In Victoria and other locations worldwide, wearing a mask is now mandatory. And for good reason, it minimises the spread of Covid-19. Our advice? Keep wearing the mask but change-up your skin routine and hygiene habits to prevent and treat maskne.

How to treat and prevent maskne

Opt for a cotton mask

Disposable masks may be convenient but they aren’t designed for long-term use. In fact, they shouldn’t be worn for longer than 4 hours at a time. Instead, choose a breathable cotton fabric mask that sits snugly on your face to prevent clogged pores and friction.

Minimise makeup

Adding any sort of makeup to your skin will minimise your skins ability to breathe. Skip the foundation and contouring and focus on the eyes if you must wear makeup.

Wash your mask after each use

Oil, dirt and sweat builds up after just one use. Along with being hygienic and minimising the spread of germs, a freshly washed mask will keep your face clean.  We recommend using a natural detergent and letting your mask dry in the sun.

Cleanse twice daily

Since your skins natural balance is being disturbed by wearing a mask, you need to make cleansing a priority. Cleanse once in the morning and once in the evening when you remove your mask.

Opt for a natural cleanser that will unclog your pores and protect your skin from breakouts. We love our Olive Soothing Cream Cleanser which has been formulated for dry skin types. Our Purify Facial Cleanser is formulated to treat oily, blemished skin.

Hydrate Your Skin

Wearing a mask can cause dry patches of skin where the mask rubs on your face. Combat it by moisturising your skin after cleansing in the AM and PM. Ensure you choose a non-clogging, silicone-free product which will allow your skin to breathe.

Our Boost Balancing Moisturiser has been formulated for oily, combination and acne-prone skin. Our Olive Repair Cream is the perfect moisturiser for dry, sensitive skin.

Focus On Protection

Wearing a face mask for long periods of time means dirt and oil is trapped. Protect your skin with our Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum. It works to give your skin the energy it needs to fight back against damaging free radicals and pollution.

Pat this on your make-up free face prior to stepping out in your mask.
